Chopping up lumber to craft housing decor is the new farm in World of Warcraft, and it's not as intuitive as you hope it would be. Just like how you can't mine from every rock in Azeroth, players will need to fly around different regions in Azeroth to look for woodcutting nodes.
In the article below, you'll find out how to start collecting lumber in World of Warcraft, all the different kinds of lumber in World of Warcraft, and the best locations for each kind of lumber.

As excited as I was to finally be able to chop down wood for hours in World of Warcraft: Midnight, (and I'm not being sarcastic, I can chop down trees in Stardew Valley for hours,) I was immediately confronted with questions when I set out to collect lumber for my first WoW housing decoration.
Questions like, "Where is my Lumberjack Axe? Why can't I cut down any of the trees around me? Why do these electric string lights need 12 pieces of wood lumber PER 5-foot section?"
Unfortunately, lumber isn't a crafting reagent that we can buy off the auction off. For housing decor crafting recipes, players have to find lumber for themselves and submit crafting order.
Here's how to start farming lumber in World of Warcraft and the best lumber farms for every kind of wood:
How to Farm Lumber in World of Warcraft: Midnight
Players will get the woodcutting skill during the housing tutorial in World of Warcraft: Midnight. During your first visit to Founder's Point for Alliance or Razorwind Shores for Horde, you'll get the quest Lumber for You during the housing tutorial questline.
Turning the quest Lumber for You in will unlock the purchasable Harvesting Hatchet. This doesn't reward you with the axe, so make sure you purchase the Hatchet from the NPC while you're talking to them!
Once you complete the quest Lumber for You on any character, you can purchase the Harvesting Hatchet on any alt. Purchase the Harvesting Hatchet from Lestia Goldenstrik in Founder's Point or Xiz'ro in Razorwind Shores.
To use the Harvesting Hatchet, put it on your bars and click on it. Then, look at your minimap. If harvestable trees are close by, you'll tiny hand icons pop up on the minimap.
The different kinds of lumber in World of Warcraft: Midnight
When looking at crafting recipes for housing decor (I recommend using WoWDB's Housing Hub for tons of recipes and inspiration,) you'll see that there are quite a few different kinds of lumber.
There are 11 different kinds of lumber to farm in World of Warcraft.
Ironwood Lumber is found in Classic WoW
Olemba Lumber is found in Outland
Coldwind Lumber is found in Northrend
Ashwood Lumber is found in Cataclysm
Fel-Touched Lumber is found in Legion
Bamboo Lumber is found in Pandaria
Darkpine Lumber is found in Battle for Azeroth
Shadowmoon Lumber is found in Draenor
Arden Lumber is found in Shadowlands
Dragonpine Lumber is found in the Dragon Isles
Dornic Fir Lumber is found in Khaz Algar
Lumber is a warbound resource, which means you can farm lumber on different characters and put it in your warbound bank to send to your main decorator.
Not all places in each region have the same number of lumber nodes, so here are the best places to farm lumber in World of Warcraft: Midnight!
The best places to farm lumber for housing decor in WoW
Ironwood Lumber: This kind of wood is found in Classic zones, and most easily in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms. The best place to farm Ironwood Lumber is south of Orgrimmar near Razor Hill and the Valley of Trials, or south of Elwynn Forest around the Twilight Grove.
Coldwind Lumber: Coldwind Lumber is found in Northrend, and the most forested place in Northrend is Grizzly Hills. The best place to farm Coldwind Lumber is in the entire region of Grizzly Hills or near Scholozar Basin!
Ashwood Lumber: Since Hyjal is one of the only lush green areas of Cataclysm, Mount Hyjal is the easiest place to find Ashwood Lumber in World of Warcraft.
Bamboo Lumber: Although most of Pandaria is covered with trees, sometimes the dense Jade Forest makes it confusing to figure out which specific tree has the node. If you want to farm Bamboo Lumber, the best place is Kun-Lai Summit.
Fel-Touched Lumber: This kind of wood is found all around the Broken Isles, but Aszuna is the best place to find Fel-Touched Lumber, especially around Narthalas Academy. The area is less rocky, making it easier to find lumber nodes.
Darkpine Lumber: To craft WoW housing decor from BFA, you'll need to find Darkpine Lumber. In Zandalar, the best place to farm Darkpine Lumber is in between Atal'Dazar and Dazar'Alor. In Kul Tiras, the best place to find lumber is north of Kennings Lodge.
Arden Lumber: This lumber can be found in Shadowlands, especially around Ardenweald. Flying up and down the forest from Dreamsong Fenn to the Heart of the Forest will give you the most lumber nodes in Shadowlands.
Dragonpine Lumber: Dragonflight has some of my favorite WoW housing decorations. The best places to farm Dragonpine Lumber are in the Azure Span south of the Ohn'ahran Plains, or in Amirdrassil.
Dornic Fir Lumber: Dornic Fir Lumber can be found on the Isle of Dorn or below. I farmed all of my Dornic Fir Lumber in the northern part of Hallowfall near where all the Lamplighters live. It took me a little less than 2 hours to farm the 120 lumber that I needed for my Shmancy Goblin String Lights. But the Isle of Dorn is also a great place to farm lumber in WoW!
Shadowmoon Lumber: This kind of lumber is currently bugged and not spawning in Draenor. You can currently trade 5 Olemba Lumber for 5 Shadowmoon Lumber with Lestia Goldenstrik in Founder's Point or Xiz'ro in Razorwind Shores.
